Script So Far

Darin College

Wizard: controls a certain type of power (electricity, gravity, heat...) wizardry is not at Darin College but there may be a secret wizarding group
Superhero: controls a certain object
Farmer: controls a certain species of animal or plant.
Technician: controls or masters a certain skill

Pam – is the technician of organization and planning
Sam – is the superhero of chairs
Zak – is the superhero of clutter and has the work study job as a admissions tour guide
Mareea – is the farmer of small rodents
Mark – is the technician of action video games
William – is a prospective student
Eronot – is the head advisor of Darin college

Act 1 Scene 1
Zak is leading a group of prospective students up from the admissions building.

Zak: (walking backwards) welcome to Darin College. Darin is probably the most distinctive school around, not only because it teaches students to channel power you all unknowingly have into one, unique skill, but what truly sets it apart is that the student atmosphere is one of a kind. Here you can learn what your power truly is – whether it be the power to control objects - superhero for short; the power to utterly master a certain skill - technician for short; or the power to communicate and command plants and animals - farmer for short – you will leave with much more than just a degree.

Student 1: How do I learn what my power is?

Zak: Ah, good question. One week before the returning students arrive, there is an orientation program for the newly accepted students. The first day it commences, Eronot, the head advisor of Darin and a mighty being in and of himself, takes each student up to the podium and pronounces their title. It is a day like none other, that day of commencement, I still remember the day he gave me the title of "superhero of clutter." (shakes his pockets which rattle) A fitting role.

Student 2: And then what will these powers do?

Zak: Ah, I was just about to breach this topic. Well there are three main subjects that classes fit into, ability, knowledge, and application. Your ability is how well you can carry out a skill, knowledge is somewhat self explanatory, but it is basically learning facts, and application is when you combine the two and produce something. Now I realize I have seemingly gone off on a tangent, but from these classes you learn to use your power. For a superhero like me, you control objects, so (takes random things out of his pockets and then gets them to hover in front of him) I can make these objects do things (one of the things is a camera which flashes, then the objects all dive into Zak's open pockets).

William: (at awe) amazing, I'm coming to Darin

Zak: good! Now here we are in front of the library where your next tour guide will show you the many books and resources Darin has to offer.

Tour guide 1 comes out of the library and ushers the prospects inside. William is the last to go in, and just as Zak is turning to leave, William comes back out, checking his watch and says:

William: I'm doing an overnight visit to Darin and I'm supposed to meet with my host, in his dorm right now... but I don't know where that is.

Zak: Who is your host?

William: I think his name is.. Sam.

Zak: Your in luck, he just happens to live in the same mod as I do, follow me.

William: what's a mod?

Zak: Well, supposedly some graduate back many semesters ago was the technician of modular housing, and donated the majority of the student lodging on campus. He must not have been the best technician though, because it seems fairly shoty workmanship to me. But then again, he gave them to the college for free, so..

William: ah, mod... modular.

Zak: yeah.

They walk in silence for a bit, William gawking at the not so spectacular buildings, Zak absentmindedly toying with a can of beans he has taken out of his pocket. They finally get to one of the mods

Zak: alright, this is it

Zak points to a building and opens the door to a spacious mod richly furnished

William: neat!

they walk in to see Sam

Sam: I bet your William, right?

William: yep

Sam: Hello then, I'm Sam, your overnight host.

William: oh, hi, I almost didn't get here on time, but fortunately Zak showed me the way, thanks

Zak: no problem, welp, I've got to do some homework before we head off to the "force of good" meeting.

William: What is the "force of good?"

Zak: Well, as usually happens when semi magical powers are at work, some people use them for evil means. We, of the "force of good," strive to put an end to this folly. We are also a big fan of animay and enjoy a fine cup of jasmine tea. You can come as a guest if you like?

William: (taking this to mean they mostly watch animay) it sounds like fun!

Zak: alright, see you there!

Zak goes upstairs. There is a short pause in which William surveys the room

Sam: so what do you think of Darin so far?

William: It seems awesome.

Sam: Some of the glamour goes away once you enroll, but yes, it is fairly amazing. Anything else you want to know about Darin?

William: well, why don't more people know about superheros and magic in general?

Sam: (gestures for William to sit down in several chairs Sam has literally drawn up, and then does so himself) Magic, as we at Darin know it, is a fairly new phenomenon. Now yes, the word magic has been around since the English language was created, and before that there were other words to describe the power it holds. But until the late 1950's, it was mythical in every sense. Then things changed. To understand magic, and probably magic is a bad word to describe this new power, you need to understand power in general, and the way the universe runs. Imagine each person is connected to a huge computer. Now what makes a computer work is code that does various things. So, you could have a program that makes energy, a program that makes time, and matter and so on, until you have an interface that people connected to can function and control. Now in the late 1950's, there was a slight change in the protocol of the universe. Eronot, the founder of Darin was one person who realized this change, and saw that it gave people much more ability to alter the world around them and thus set out to learn how to use it. He found that this power was a different for everyone. I'm not going say that I know how or why Eronot found that I could control chairs, or Zak clutter, but that’s why people go to Darin. Now, even if magic wasn't real until the middle of the 20th century, it seems like there should have been more publicity, right. Well, Eronot did not want everyone to try to use their power until they were trained in what it does. So he has been able to cause people to take a blinds eye to this power until they know how to use it. This won't last forever, as more and more people learn how to use their ability, the harder it is to hide magic from the masses.

William: but why so random abilities, is there anyone who is, say the superhero of fire, or lightning, or something like that.

Sam: there isn't to my knowledge, although I don't know everyone by any means. Like I said, I don't why people have the abilities they do.

They sit in silence for a moment

Sam: We should probably get something to eat before the meeting.

Sam gets up

William: alright, do you mean go to the cafeteria?

Sam: Well, I'm not on the meal plan, but you can go to the cafeteria if you like, you should have gotten a ticket letting you in for free. Meet back at quarter to eight so that we can go to the "force of good" meeting.

William: where is the dinning commons?

Sam: oh, if you go out this door (points) and follow the path to the road, then take a left and go strait through the intersection, between the meeting hall and the dormitory you should see it. Ask anyone there were it is and they will tell you if you are unsure.

William: great

William gets up and goes to the door

Sam: see you at quarter to eight

William: yep

William goes out the door and Sam gets up, the scene gradually changes

Act 1 Scene 2
Sam is sitting at a table just finishing dinner and reading a textbook, there is a knock an the door, Sam gets up and opens it. William comes in.

Sam: how was dinner?

William: pretty good

Sam: No problem finding it?

William: I asked someone once, but I finally got there.

Sam: sorry if my directions weren't that helpful... well, I just need to get my backpack and Zak and were off to the meeting.

William: alright

Sam goes up stairs and can be heard gathering things in his room, then knocking on Zak's door. Zak emerges and they both come down stairs. Zak is carrying a large backpack.

Zak: you ready?

William: um, yeah I guess.

Zak: Than were off!

Zak opens the door and they exit the mod. The scene ends with the door closing.

Act 1 Scene 3
Zak, Sam and William are entering a classroom already occupied by Pam, Fiber Man, George and Mareea.

Pam: Hey Zak, Sam, I see you’ve brought a guest.

Sam: Yes, this is William, a prospy of mine.

Pam: (to William) Welcome! I hope your enjoying your visit?

William: Oh yeah! Darin is like.. nothing else, I mean, it's amazing!

Pam: great! ... none of you know where Mark is, do you?

Sam: um, he's either on level ten thousand of some video game or he's asleep. I don't think he's left his room for a week.

Pam: I wonder how he survives on a diet of soda and chips... Well, let's get down to business. I think it would be a good idea to introduce everyone for our new guest. I'm Pam, technician of organization and management (gestures to George)

George: I'm George, technician of video production

Mareea: I'm Mareea, farmer of small rodents.

Fiber: I am fiber man - also know as Bob - supreme hero of everything fiber like!

Zak: You already know me, but I'm Zak, superhero of clutter and paraphernalia.

Sam: And I'm Sam, superhero of chairs.

Pam: Great. Now, first on our agenda is the next Zurk meeting tomorrow. These posters were plastered all over campus. (Picks up a poster reading "Do you want to be brutally tortured by a wet spatula and then finished of by new aged music, well you better come to the next Zurk meeting or this will be your fate")

William: What is Zurk?

Pam: Zurk is a student group founded back in the late 70's to try to find other ways to use power. At first, Zurk was a legitimate contributor to Darin, it made several great findings until it changed ownership. When the person who refers to himself as "the lord chancellor of Zurk" took power, Zurk took a turn for the worse. Students started going missing for weeks on end, only to be found, as was one case, duck taped to the wall of the sports center babbling incoherently. That is when our group was founded to put an end to this insanity.

William: How come the college hasn't tried to do something about it?

Pam: we have talked to Eronot, and he has been reluctant take action, which seems uncharacteristic of him. This group seems to be doing criminal actions and getting away with it, but for some reason those who can try to charge them are looking the other way. We are not however and hope to put an end to the ways of the Zurk.

Sam: So what do you suppose we do about their meeting tomorrow?

Fiber: I say storm the place!.

Pam: that would only get them to retaliate, I propose we post fliers denouncing Zurk.

George: I could put a clip up on the Darintran TV channel

Pam: that would be great.
